Biocatalytic membranes for the degradation of micro/nano plastics from wastewater

The impact of the huge global demand for plastics in the 20th century is causing major problems for the environment and our health. In fact, our seas and oceans already contain millions of tonnes of plastic that, over time, disintegrate into microplastics (particles smaller than 1 millimetre in size), and these break down further into nanoplastics (particles smaller than 0.1 micrometres in size).

In this context, BMRex, a project funded by the European Commission, aims to develop a new biocatalytic membrane capable of capturing and degrading suspended pollutants such as microplastics and nanoplastics.

Cetaqua, as a partner in the project, participates in the analysis of microplastics, evaluates the microplastics present in different stages of wastewater treatment plants and will evaluate the need for pre-treatment to maximise the performance of the biocatalytic membranes.
