Innovative methodologies to prevent and mitigate diffuse pollution from urban water runoff
The European project WATERUN, funded by the Horizon Europe programme, aims to develop innovative methodologies and systems for the monitoring, analysis and mitigation of risks associated with diffuse pollution caused by urban water runoff. Through a collaborative approach with local and regional entities, the project seeks to provide practical tools for more sustainable management of these waters in urban environments.
WATERUN is being developed across three case studies: Santiago de Compostela (Spain), Aarhus (Denmark) and Amman (Jordan). In Santiago, two pilot units will be implemented with sustainable urban drainage systems (SuDS) and wetlands for the treatment of runoff water in strategic industrial areas.
A key element of the project is the co-creation process with relevant local stakeholders in urban water management, ensuring that the solutions developed are useful, applicable and adapted to the real needs of the Galician territory and other European regions.
