Improving the resilience of critical infrastructure to climate events
Disasters caused by extreme weather events (heat waves, droughts or floods) have increased significantly in recent years and will continue to increase in the future. To address these challenges, the ICARIA project, funded by Horizon Europe, has been launched with the aim of increasing knowledge of the impacts of natural disasters on critical strategic infrastructure in different sectors such as water, energy and transport.
ICARIA proposes a comprehensive framework for climate resilience and economic and social impact assessment. This includes the development and validation of cutting-edge models capable of simulating risks arising from extreme weather events, particularly combined events such as Storm Gloria in 2020, when a maritime storm and heavy rains affected the coast of Catalonia. The impact assessment focuses on essential infrastructure and services. The project is testing its solutions in Spain, Greece and Austria.
