Aigües de Barcelona and Cetaqua keep promoting a circular economy model with Gavà Town Council

• Aigües de Barcelona, Gavà City Council and Cetaqua sign the third agreement to implement a circular economy model in Gavà

• The agreement positions the city of Gavà as a European benchmark in urban sustainability

Rubén Ruiz, General Manager of Aigües de Barcelona, Carlos Montero, General Manager of Cetaqua and Gemma Badia, the new Mayoress of Gavà, today signed the renewal of the collaboration agreement to develop and apply a circular economy model in this municipality, giving continuity to the two previous agreements carried out since 2017.

The aim of the agreement, an example of public-private collaboration, is to give continuity to the Circular Gavà project in which 10 potential synergies between territorial actors were identified through the analysis of water, energy and waste flows to apply the principles of the circular economy as a means to ensure the social, economic and environmental sustainability of the city.

The mayoress of Gavà thanked Aigües de Barcelona and Cetaqua for their “important commitment to help Gavà to continue advancing along a necessary path, that of the circular economy and innovation, which responds to the foundations of municipal management”. Badia stressed that this agreement establishes “new objectives in terms of the reuse of water and waste, in short, in terms of the challenge that we cities have ahead of us to tackle climate change, to equip ourselves with the tools for regeneration, recovery and environmental sustainability”.

In the water area, actions will be promoted to facilitate the implementation of reuse. Specifically, the feasibility of using reclaimed water for non-potable uses in the municipality will be demonstrated through the implementation of a water recharge point and the feasibility study of a second pilot project on an industrial estate.

Rubén Ruiz, General Manager of Aigües de Barcelona, highlighted the value of this alliance “to promote the use of reclaimed water and support the city of Gavà in its leadership as a benchmark in the circular economy and water resilience”. For his part, Carlos Montero, CEO of Cetaqua, commented that “at Cetaqua we focus our projects on having a sustainable and positive impact on the territory, providing real application solutions based on the principles of the circular economy”.

On the other hand, in the energy-waste area, the identification of solutions will be carried out to implement a pilot project for selective waste collection in the industrial estates of the municipality and advances in the energy management model with the dissemination of good practices and business opportunities among the business fabric.

The trajectory of Gavà Circular, together with the commitment of Aigües de Barcelona, Gavà City Council and Cetaqua to sustainable development, has led to the creation of two outstanding initiatives. On the one hand, the HUB ECCUS creation, a Circular Economy Innovation Hub to promote an urban development model based on environmental, economic and social sustainability. On the other hand, the participation together with the municipality of Castelldefels in the Intelligent Cities Challenge (ICC), an initiative of the European Commission to promote the use of new technologies for the smart, green and socially responsible recovery of 136 cities.
