Digitalization of the water cycle towards a sustainable tourism model

Public-private partnership projects: WATOURISM

WATOURISM aims to prove that the digitalization of the integral water cycle is a key process to promote a sustainable tourism model. To achieve this, the project will generate tools and methodologies for decision-making for administrations and the private sector.

WATOURISM will analyze the data of smart metering using artificial intelligence techniques applied to territorial and touristic management, a pioneering approach that goes beyond traditional applications of water service companies. In addition, it will boost public-private collaborations to involve all key actors in sustainable practices and to compensate for the water footprint of households and companies in this sector.

Calvià (Mallorca, Balearic Islands) is the scene chosen due to the repercussions of tourism in the area. The project intends to improve sustainable water management thanks to an estimation of the water footprint of touristic activities and the identification of political and technological solutions to reduce it. One of the solutions is the simulation of different demand management policies, like different tariff options, before their implementation.
